Grand Opening of the Telma “River”!

August 8, 2010

We at Zalul want everyone to attend our big event tomorrow, August 9th. Remember to wear sunscreen and come support Zalul in protecting against the creation of the Telma “River”.  See below for more information.

We are happy to announce the creation of the “Telma River” a new, unique river in Israel!  The “Telma River” flows to the sea from the opening of a waste disposal pipe that comes from the Thelma factory in Haifa.  Every year, the factory pumps about two-hundred tons of organic material, ten tons of oil, four tons of nitrogen, two tons of ammonia, and two tons of phosphorous into the Mediterranean Sea by way of this “river”. The pumping is performed under the auspices of the Ministry of the Environment and in cooperation with Unilever.  Zalul calls on the management of Unilever and of the Telma factory to stop the flow of sewage onto the Haifa beaches. Additionally, Zalul calls on the Ministry of the Environment to immediately stop the flow of sewage onto the beach, even if this requires the cancelation of the factory’s discharge permit.  Our organization calls on the Municipality of Haifa to immediately cancel the business license of the Thelma factory until the streaming of waste onto the city’s beaches ceases completely.

*** The event will take place on Monday, August 9, 2010 at 10:30 am at the mouth of the river. The gathering begins at 10:00 am at the opening of the sewage pipe. Signs will be placed at “Mispanot Yisrael Junction (צומת מספנות ישראל)”.  Transportation from Haifa train station “Haifa Lev HaMifratz” will leave at 9:45 am. If you need a ride, please notify Ortal in advance, by telephone at 03-5762666.  ***
