Save Palmachim Beach
The Ministry of Environmental Protection has canceled plans for the construction of the vacation resort on Palmachim Beach. In 2000 the plan to build a 350-room hotel passed, but due to public opposition the Ministry of Environmental Protection passed a resolution for the reconsideration of the usage of the land. Gilad Erdan supports the idea that the beach should be designated as open space in order to preserve its natural beauty. He stated, “The government took a historic decision today, which gives preference to the public interest and corrects past mistakes made at the expense of the public. Israel’s beaches are a scarce resource and we must do everything possible to preserve open and equal access to them for the public as a whole.” The cancellation of the original building plan is a significant victory for the environmental movement and reflects the public desire to save Palmachim Beach (see the YouTube video).
