Israel’s “Clean Coast Program” Cited in the UN Marine Litter Report

Israel’s Clean Coast Program has been operated for the past four years by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and its main goal is to clean up the coastal areas of Israel. They are achieving this goal through environmental education, increased enforcement of environmental laws, as well as working alongside and encouraging the general public to make a difference on Israels’ coasts.  Due to their continual efforts they were cited in the United Nation’s Marine Litter Report, stating that Israel had “showed a significant improvement in coastal cleanliness”.

Although progress is being made there is still a long way to go for there to be a clean Israel. The continued support of the government in these areas is essential, but without the passion and determination of activists and environmental groups these programs would not get off the ground. There is still years of work to do and the persistence of the environmental groups which deal with Israel’s coast know this and are preparing for the road ahead.
