Rowing Champion Seriously Injured in Polluted Yarkon River
An unfortunate accident took place on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 in Tel Aviv’s polluted Yarkon River. According to Haaretz, rowing champion Yasmin Feingold was overturned in her boat while her feet were attached, causing her submersion in the water to lead to unconsciousness. Before being rescued by Avi Toibin, a passerby to the accident, other onlookers stood by the bank of the river hesitant to jump into the polluted water:
The Yarkon has been severely polluted for decades, a result of increased waste disposal in its stream and reduced natural water replenishment. Efforts to improve the river’s water quality were launched only in recent years.
Feingold is in serious condition, currently being treated in the city’s Ichilov Hospital.
